In 1874 Peter Bulman an expat Scot produced tweed, blankets, felted cloth, shirting and flannel in his yet to be named mill on the banks of Distillery Creek in Launceston, Tasmania. The press dubbed it the Waverley Woollen Factory and years later Bulman would name his factory, Waverley Woollen Mills. Move forward 142 years we have updated the name and brand to Waverley Mills.
Proudly Australian made
OUR PROUD HISTORY
For nearly 150 years Waverley Mills has been producing Australia’s highest quality wool textiles and made textile manufacturing a dominant industry in Tasmania with Waverley Mills once boasting 80% of the Australian blanket market.
Always quality. Always luxury. Always authentic and respectful to the environment. Always a leader, Waverley Mills continues that tradition.
A Story to Tell
Waverley Mills is luxury, quality, sustainability. As Australia’s oldest working textile mill (established in 1874), we produce designer wool products that are guaranteed to last, beautifully and carefully crafted and ethically produced.
We start with the essentials: the finest quality wool, alpaca, mohair and cotton. Then we use only the most skilled artisan craftsmanship plus the latest in sustainable practices to produce iconic blankets, rugs, throws, scarves and clever recycled blankets.
Our rich history has seen us become a market leader in high quality textile production and our pioneering spirit has ensured we lead the way in innovative, sustainable production processes.
We simply do the best, to give you the best.
Situated on the idyllic banks of Distillery Creek in Launceston. Crafted in Tasmania. Proudly Australian owned. All our iconic products are made to be naturally beautiful and are made to last.
Our Sustainability Practices
Waverley Mills is committed to the environment and the communities in which we operate, ensuring responsible corporate behaviour at every stage of production: from where we source our wool and energy consumption to design, the finished product and distribution.
We achieve sustainable and ethical manufacturing processes through our dedication to the following.
The Environment: For 142 years Waverley Mills has used natural fibres which are biodegradable, recyclable and a natural resource. We minimise waste and produce a range of luxurious, quality recycled wool blankets and throws made from our own unused yarn and second hand blankets.
Due to our prime location at Distillery Creek, for 50 years Waverley Mills was powered by hydro-electricity and we have plans to reinstate hydro power together with solar power to the mill.
The Community: We treat our suppliers like our partners. We treat them like we would like to be treated. If we grow, they grow. We use all Australian based companies and services. All our natural fibres are sourced from local suppliers in Tasmania and have been for over 100 years. We give back to those in need and have partnered throughout our long history with charities like St Vincent de Paul and Mary’s House in Sydney (a refuge supporting women and children who need help due to domestic violence).
The Economy: To grow locally, we know we need to support locally. We buy locally, employ locally and have always, and will always, pay a fair market price for the natural fibres we use. Our quality products are made to last a lifetime.
- “I really liked the look of the recycled throws on the website and took the plunge. I have to say its way softer than I imagined and so warm. The kids keep fighting over it when on the lounge...looks like ill be back for another...”
- “I have owned Waverley products for years and years and so happy they are back with a new range”
